Swapping Countries

A life changing experience swapping countries and how you organize your trip is up to you, although there are a couple “companies” that say they will help you and organize your working holiday for you so you do not have to worry. Well ladies and gentlemen I am here to help you out so you can maximize your full opportunity and get the most out of swapping countries for a year. My first point of advice is do not bother with those companies. Unfortunately I learned the hard way but hey you do not learn without making mistakes, that is the way we roll and gain perspective on ourselves and the world around us.

I am currently in Australia, from Canada. Swapping countries has been and is the best experience in my own personal growth while gaining more hospitality experience for my future career. Two in one deal, doing what I love. Although the only thing I would do differently is not paying Global Work And Travel Company to help me make the move from Canada to Australia. I got my own Visa, Got my own job(s) during my one year here in the land of down under. They “help” you with your resume but I do not like the style they use and it got me no where so I revamped it and used my own. They got me interviews but not a single job, Anyone can get an interview but its the passion within yourself is what lands you the job.

I started my own job hunt with the help of LinkedIn, the greatest tool there is. Found all the Hotel Managers and Front Office Managers at every hotel I liked to work for while in Australia, all over and sent my CV to them. Had a couple Skype interviews while I was still at home in Canada and when I arrived into Australia I followed up and viola landed my first job within two weeks of being in Australia. Although the job took me far north as Darwin, Northern Territory. I wouldn’t have chosen Darwin if it hadn’t chosen me, it is not my ideal place to live but it has been wonderful weather while the rest of the country was cold this winter.

In a month’s time I am off to another city on the east coast where I found my somewhat dream job, not really dream job but my dream hotel brand. Holiday Inn Cairns, Holiday Inn called my name again and I was ecstatic to accept.

I am quite business savy, individual so maybe that is why Global work and travel company couldn’t do anything for me. But even if you are not my the same style you can still do it yourself, just do not be afraid and just grab the bull by its balls and go for it. And if you need help with setting up your resume, send me an email and I would be more than willing to lend my expertise. last time I fixed a resume for a co worker, she landed a job she wanted within a week.so therefore I promise you that if I help you with your resume, you will get employers calling you demanding an interview. Now I can not say I promise you to get the job because in the end picture that is up to you and your passion within the interview, everyone is unique and gives a different aspect to an interview. But I can promise you employers will be contacting you with my help on your resume.

I have saved up heaps within a year to get me to Australia, I had my Visa in September 2012 and I had to use it before the same month next year. I did not plan on getting my plane tickets so fast because I had just returned home from Egypt and Spain, but that’s the thing if you do not go for it without thinking It probably will not happen because you then think about it too much and nothing never happens, that is why it is best to just do!

Sometimes I forget where I am because I have adjusted well to the Australian lifestyle, but I have learned a few things about these oddly amazing Australians. Some good and some bad but we got to take in the good and bad to make great things happen. First, Australians talk quiet and so fast. And I have found if you ask pardon, some of them get quite rude because you are asking them to repeat, to confirm that you heard correctly. And the pronunciation of letters and words gets jumbled and causes a miss communication and without being understanding they just get angry because we did not understand them correctly the first time around. Whoever said Canadians and Australians are alike, were wrong. I find being Canadian, I say sorry and thank you a lot, more than I should sometimes but that is just a Canadian way? isn’t it?   I don’t know overall at the end of the day Australian’s are still cool people to hang out with, and just like anyone nationality it can be frustrating at times but we cope and take each day by day.

Weeks Update – Australia

What a hectic past two days it has been at work, so busy. Today I swear all I did was chase up chargebacks (credit card authorizations) I just do not feel it, not like how I felt back home in Canada at the Holiday Inn. And Now the Holiday Inn is calling my name again, Holiday Inn Cairns is calling me. I want to take it, but I want to talk to Michael (front office manager) before I call Faith back and say I will take it. I need to be professional about this. This is what I want. I don’t know if it is my heart or my head telling me to go for it but it defiantly feels right. A year is defiantly not long enough, I just might have to extend it but then that means three months on a farm, but hey its character building. Cairns is a lot cheaper than Darwin.

This past week has gone by quick, On Saturday I went to my very first AFL game “Aussie Footy” Melbourne v Brisbane Lions. Awesome seats they were too, thanks to Rydges. Took some couchsurfing friends to the game, free tickets why not. Had a couple beers at the resort by poolside before heading to the stadium.

Went to hungry jacks inside the terminal at the airport for dinner, now that felt a little weird walking through security and then walking right back out. Normally you can not get through security without a boarding pass but not here in Australia. But then it is good because there is not much places to eat or do around the Resort, so good to have a place to eat for a quick meal near by.

Been browsing the flights to Cairns tonight and given my two weeks from the current roster, and with finding cheap flights to fly to Cairns – September 4th $189.50 one way. So that will give me exactly three months here at Rydges. I could defiantly last longer but Holiday Inn is calling my name again. It is a calling I have to listen to – it is what I know, and have grown with. It is my career and Holiday Inn IHG can give me what I need.

weekly update – Australia

Went to Crocodylus Park on sunday with Luke a fellow couchsurfer, it was fun – held a baby crocodile, fed a HUGE crocodile, held a snake, saw monkeys, baboons, lions, tigers, kangaroos, emos, ostrich and many more animals. For lunch I had a crocodile burger which tastes like chicken. There was a couchsurfing bbq last Friday but I couldn’t have attended due to work but next Friday for sure. And there is a AFL game on Saturday where my operations manager is getting free tickets so I want to take some of my mates to the game, and watch some aussie footy. Not sure what to do for my birthday on Thursday – maybe go pamper myself with a manicure or pedicure, defiantly a pedicure.

Had an Skype/Google Interview with the Holiday Inn Cairns last week, I felt it went really well and yesterday they asked for a copy of my passport so cross your fingers I get that job then I can move. Darwin is alright but defiantly do not want to stay here forever. Maybe just 3 months, not liking the cliques here – and I do not want to work in a place that feels like highschool, that is so in the past. I want what I had back home at the holiday Inn, professional atmosphere. But I am learning lots more about customer service in Australia or maybe its just Rydges, I am not sure. I need to work in one more hotel to judge fairly on customer service in Australia.

I am hoping to have a BBQ in nightcliff with a few couchsurfing friends so we will see if that happens and that plan goes through.

Been working the evening shift, 3 pm to 11 pm so have not been able to do much but relax and have a few drinks on neightbours deck after work.

Australian Weekly Update

The older one gets the harder it becomes to finding people to hang out with and to continue that hang out, One tip is to find one good same sex friend that you can hang out with, where ever you end up living that way you always have someone where you are. To the international ladies: Aussie blokes, be careful they may seem cute and easy going conversationalist but they are only after one thing and then if they do not like what they see they give a lousy excuse saying you are a sweet girl but we have nothing in common. Well news to those Aussie Blokes it takes more than a day to build on those uncommon differences, that’s how friendships are formed, on differences. But whatever life moves on.

Holiday Inn Cairns contacted me back from my Duty Manager application and have a Skype interview this Wednesday and I do have IHG customer service and understand what the hotel needs for a perfect Heartbeat. I want to work with what I know and grow my career from there as I am not getting any younger; 8 days I am turning 26. ah! 26! I do like working here at the Rydges Darwin but Holiday Inn is where my experience is and it is where I can excel at. IHG allows you to be you, based on real people! There are just so many cliques here at the Rydges, it is like I am back in Highschool, a little depressing – and Couchsurfing is not as huge here in Darwin, not many people so it has been touch meeting people outside of work.

Laundry day today, that is the thing with only traveling backpacking style, fewer clothes more times you have to do laundry. Still waiting for my birthday box from the folks as I asked them to put some Lays Ketchup chips. been craving some Lays chips. Grocery shopping here, majority of the food is Australian made – now that’s one of many things why things are so expensive here and why the Australian economy is doing better than most.

Got some pictures developed and hung them on the wall to make my room a feel a little bit more homey! it has done the job. Got a picture of my Holiday Inn Duo, another of my Canadian Duo that I met in Surfers Paradise and some other photos.

Heading out to the Deckchair Cinema to watch the movie Drift under the stars with Chloe, a fellow couchsurfer. A outdoor movie theatre, have not been to one well never. Then another couchsurfing meet up at Monsoons on Wednesday. Going to take the hotel shuttle into the city at 5pm so that will limit the amount of money I have to spend on a taxi back home, I could bike ride into town but then biking home would be a lot of work and would be a little far in the dark riding home. taxi fare is reasonable here in Darwin, approximately $25 from Resort to City and vice versa.

Australia Two Months

Happy Canada day to all my fellow Canadians back home, hope you all had a wonderful long weekend and enjoyed your time with friends and family at the lake or whatever you had planned being a sunny beautiful weekend. I represented Canada as much as I could over here in Australia, wearing the maple leaf as often as I can.

It has been two months being in Australia, it has been a rough road – as no one has said that life is easy, all you got to do is take it head on and embrace the experience. It helps being working, making some cash while my experience here in Australia – as I am having troubles with my visa card and getting sent a new one for security issues. Never had something like this go through but again it is all in the experience. At least I have hidden savings but not using it unless I absolute need it. I am trying not to stress because I am still making money weekly. And Rent is going up to $195/weekly from $185/weekly but that is alright because I wont have that much paying it as I only have four months left here, six month work contract.

Moved out of the resort today and into Staff housing, feels nice not being in the resort rooms and now located in the far right of the property some what far away from reception but not to far for a quick commute but still far away to feel that you are far from work. Just chilling, relaxing for the day and organizing my belongings into my accommodation. I have some pictures I want to print off and hang up on the walls, and have my farewell card from fortis properties out on display. Miss those guys! Hope to work with them once again upon my return to Canada.

Bought a new camera yesterday as my old one went flat due to capsizing and getting too wet when sailing. So now I have a waterproof camera. found out it is only a 15 minute bike ride to casuarina shopping centre. Getting my directions around Darwin – I have my path to the Darwin sailing club and now have my path to the shopping centre. It has been nice not seeing a Wal-Mart every five minutes, and they still have Kmart here which is awesome, have not seen a Kmart in ages. They do have another store called Big W so I think that is suppose to be a Wal-Mart version. So I try and go to Kmart and not Big W. Nice when shopping, if its 5.00$ then it is actually 5 dollars, as tax I already included into the price. So it is easier to find and pay for exact change.
